My Last Minute Getaway to Corralejo Fuerteventura Full of Surprises and Adventure

March can often bring dreariness, but this year, I chose to escape the gloom again with another spontaneous trip to Corralejo, Fuerteventura. What began as a last-minute decision quickly turned into an exhilarating weekend that surpassed my expectations. We secured an all-inclusive stay at the O7 Aloe Corralejo, which was both budget-friendly and comfortable. The hotel was conveniently located just a short walk from the beach and the lively town center.

Arriving in Corralejo

Upon arriving to the Island, I am always instantly captivated by the area's natural beauty. driving from the airport to our hotel can at times appear like you are driving across a moon scape. Since our visit last year, I noticed that there has been a new road built to take you from the airport to Corralejo with visible signs of future developments to come. It feels like the island is certainly trying to fall in line with the other more popular Canary destinations.

Comfortable Accommodations

Our hotel, O7 Aloe Corralejo, was straightforward yet comfortable. I noticed renovations were in progress following a recent change in ownership. Some returning guests expressed concern about potential price increases due to changes, but I was optimistic about the hotel's future. We stayed in an apartment near the adult-only section, which was set to receive exciting improvements, such as a new pool bar.

The pool area featured modern and comfortable furniture, perfect for soaking up the warm sun during the afternoons. The hotel catered well to families, offering various activities that kept both kids and adults entertained.

Directly across from our hotel was a nature reserve bustling with wild rabbits. The stunning dunes of Corralejo created an almost magical backdrop, enhancing our overall experience.

The Carnival Experience

Our timing could not have been better! By sheer luck, our trip was set against the backdrop of the renowned Carnival de Carnivales. This vibrant festival transformed the town into a lively spectacle of colourful parades, showcasing beauty queens from local villages, cheerful drag queens, and elaborately decorated floats. The parade's theme was India, featuring costumes that shone with bright colours and intricate designs.

The atmosphere was electric, filling the streets with music, laughter, and a sense of celebration. We joined in the festivities, by moving along with the procession and absorbing the local spirit.

Exploring the Beaches

The splendour of Corralejo extended beyond our hotel. The expansive beaches are a sight to behold, with stretches of golden sand leading to serene views of the turquoise ocean. Kite surfers glided effortlessly across the waves, creating a mesmerizing scene for beach enthusiasts. The warm, sunny days transitioned into pleasantly cool evenings, making it ideal for relaxation.

To enhance our exploration, we rented e-scooters, making it easy and affordable to cruise around town. This added a fun twist to our adventures, allowing us to discover the area's natural beauty at our own pace.

Tasting Local Cuisine

Evenings in Corralejo became memorable with our culinary adventures. We enjoyed traditional tapas at a charming local restaurant, returning two nights for the mouthwatering small plates that perfectly captured the island's culinary essence.

During our meals, I bravely attempted a few Spanish phrases. The locals were pleasantly surprised to hear a tourist speaking their language, leading to fun interactions and shared laughter.

Overall, my last-minute trip to Corralejo, Fuerteventura, was a delightful adventure. From the vibrant Carnival de Carnivales to the awe-inspiring beaches, the local culinary scene and the beautiful marina, each moment refreshed my spirit.
