Embarking on an Epic Familiarisation Road Trip: From Orlando to New York City with Music, Beaches and Dolly!

As an independent travel agent, I’m always on the lookout for ways to expand my knowledge of destinations. This August, I'm gearing up for my second of three familiarisation trips of the year, and it promises to be an unforgettable adventure! I can’t wait to share the details of my itinerary, which will take me through some of the most exciting and diverse locations in the U.S.

This journey blends fun, learning, and thrilling experiences as I explore everything from theme parks to vibrant music scenes. With planned stops in Orlando, Atlanta, Pigeon Forge, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, and a quick trip to iconic New York City, this trip has something for everyone.

Orlando: Kicking Off with a Convention

I’ll kick off my journey in the lively city of Orlando. Known for its world-class theme parks, Orlando is also a hub for various conventions. Attending a convention for four days will not only allow me to network with fellow travel professionals but also to gain insights into the latest travel trends and tips for promoting destinations effectively.

After soaking up knowledge, I’ll make sure to set aside time for the exhilarating rides and magical experiences that Orlando offers. Did you know that in 2022, Orlando topped the list of the U.S. cities with the highest hotel occupancy rates, at around 73%? That vibrant atmosphere is sure to fuel my excitement for the road trip ahead!

Atlanta: Where Music Meets Culture

My next stop is a one-night stay in Atlanta, a city rich in musical history. Known as the birthplace of many genres, including hip-hop and soul, I plan to catch a live show during my visit. This will give me a taste of the local music scene.

While in Atlanta, I also want to explore the Civil Rights Museum and visit landmark sites like the Fox Theatre. I’m excited to dive into the local cuisine, such as the famous Atlanta fried chicken. Exploring this dynamic city will enhance my travel recommendations!

Pigeon Forge: Adventure Awaits

After Atlanta, I’ll head to Pigeon Forge for two days of adventure. Home to the famous Dollywood, this destination is all about the magic of Dolly Parton. I can't wait to ride the thrilling alpine coaster, which features breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains. Whilst surrounded by such stunning natural beauty, it would be criminal for me not to fit in the Cades Cove Loop which offers the opportunity for some bear spotting.

No trip to Pigeon Forge is complete without a visit to Dollywood. The park's mix of exciting rides, live shows, and artisan crafts truly embodies Dolly’s spirit. I anticipate this experience will leave me inspired to promote this unique destination to potential travelers.

Nashville: The Heart of Country Music

From Pigeon Forge, I’ll make my way to Nashville for two nights. Often known as the home of country music, Nashville is a dream for music lovers. Visiting iconic places like the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame will provide invaluable insights for my travel offerings.

In Nashville, I’m eager to savor the vibrant food scene, especially the famous hot chicken and local BBQ. A 2021 survey revealed that about 41.9% of tourists visit for the amazing culinary experiences. I can't wait to experience this aspect firsthand!

Memphis: A Night of Blues

Next, I’ll spend one night in Memphis. This city is known for its deep musical roots, influencing genres from blues to rock 'n' roll. Visiting Beale Street and immersing myself in live music is the perfect way to connect with the city's rich heritage.

Memphis also boasts delicious barbecue, with nearly 80% of visitors treating themselves to this iconic cuisine. I'll definitely take advantage of my time here to soak in the vibe before heading to my next destination.

New Orleans: A Cultural Melting Pot

After Memphis, I’m off to New Orleans for three nights! Famous for its vibrant music scene, unique culture, and incredible food, NOLA is alive with energy.

I’m particularly looking forward to exploring the French Quarter, enjoying some jazz music, and indulging in gumbo and beignets. In 2022, New Orleans was named one of the top travel destinations, seeing over 18 million visitors. This place is bursting with life and rich cultural experiences that I can’t wait to capture.

Journeying Along the Coast

After soaking up the experience in New Orleans, I’ll spend two days traveling along the beautiful Gulf Coast back to Orlando. While my stops are still a mystery, I’m eager to discover hidden gems along the coast that will offer insights into coastal travel.

I anticipate stunning beaches, quaint local shops, and perhaps some roadside attractions that capture the essence of Southern charm. Each stop will be an opportunity to gather valuable information for future travellers.

New York City: The Grand Finale

Upon returning to Orlando, I’ll spend one night at an airport hotel before departing for the iconic New York City! Just one night in NYC may feel like a whirlwind, but I plan to make the most of it. I am also VERY familiar with the City as it is actually where I got married and have visited every year since 2013.

From visiting Coney Island to enjoying a classic New York slice of pizza, the excitement is electric. Over 62 million people visited NYC in 2022, making it one of the most sought-after destinations. This experience will be the perfect way to cap off my epic familiarisation road trip.

Wrapping Up My Adventure

As I prepare for this incredible multi-stop journey, I am filled with excitement. This trip is not only about sightseeing, but it’s also about immersing myself in the culture, music, and unique experiences that make each destination special.

By the end, I will gain firsthand knowledge and insights about places that I can confidently recommend to my clients. Whether they are music lovers or adventure seekers, this itinerary has something for everyone.
